According to AHA News, December 07, 2009, uncompensated care continues a steady rise for U.S. hospitals.

Uncompensated care continues to rise for America’s hospitals. U.S. hospitals provided $36.4 billion in uncompensated care in 2008, up from $34 billion in 2007, according to the latest data from the AHA’s “Annual Survey of Hospitals.”The amount of uncompensated care provided by hospitals has increased by $14.8 billion, or 69%, since 2000. The amount of uncompensated care provided by hospitals has increased steadily through the years and exceeded $10 billion for the first time in 1988. The survey includes charity care and bad debt, valued at the cost to the hospital of the services provided.Medicare and Medicaid payments to U.S. hospitals in 2008 reached $32.4 billion, up from $31.9 billion in 2007 and $3.8 billion in 2000. Medicare reimbursed 91 cents and Medicaid reimbursed 89 cents for every dollar hospitals spent caring for these patients.
